Truck Mounted Attenuators

Construction teams utilize many types of traffic devices to keep our roads safe. From accident prevention to high-volume traffic rerouting— safety is always the top priority.

Our truck- and trailer-mounted attenuators are built to absorb and reduce impact forces from high-speed collisions, saving lives and reducing damages. They are an invaluable component of keeping construction zones safe for workers and motorists alike. These devices have saved hundreds of lives and we are proud to offer the best mounted attenuators in the industry.

We have a rental fleet of complete Truck Mounted Attenuator (TMA) units ready to be deployed on your project. If you would like to purchase a TMA we can either custom build a complete unit to your specifications or sell the Scorpion attenuator separately.

Construction and Safety

The Scorpion TMA consists of strut and cartridge sections that are linked together on a support frame. The curved side rails are designed to redirect errant vehicles away from the rear of the truck, providing vital side-angle impact protection. The aluminum boxes are filled with a moisture-proof, aluminum honeycomb material. The boxes, together with the aforementioned curved side rails, absorb the energy from an impacting vehicle. The aluminum boxes are painted with a bright yellow powder-coated finish, for high visibility and lasting durability. They may be used for both permanent and temporary applications. Aluminum impact attenuators may be more of an up-front investment, but as a result, they are often able to be repaired after impact, unlike water-filled attenuators.

The TrafFix Devices’ Scorpion TMA has been tested and has PASSED ALL optional and mandatory requirements suggested in the NCHRP-350 Report for TL-3. Additionally, the Scorpion TMA has passed the UKTD49, 110 km/h (68 mph) test. The Scorpion TMA has successfully passed a “worse case” side angle re-directive impact test, going above and beyond all governmental testing requirements. More information can be provided upon request.

We offer three different Scorpion NCHRP-350 TMA Models

Model A TL-2

The Scorpion TMA Model A utilizes only the cartridge section providing impact protection up to 45 mph (75 km/h). It incorporates a modular design, which can be upgraded to a Model C or Model C-90 (to meet NCHRP-350, TL-3 requirements), by simply adding the strut section.

Model C-90 TL-3

The Scorpion TMA Model C-90 folds just past the 90-degree position, and as such is optimal for when folding over the truck bed is not desired. This feature allows for easy transit in the upright position. The rear strut is raised 10-degrees for added mobility and ground clearance, making it ideal for safely clearing exit ramps, driveways and other inclined surfaces in the stored or travel position. The Scorpion TMA Model C-90 provides TL-3 impact protection.

Model C TL-3

The Scorpion TMA Model C folds up and over the bed of flat bed, stake bed, or dump truck. This particular device has a compact design and balanced weight distribution that makes it ideal for high-speed travel. The Scorpion TMA Model C provides TL-3 impact protection. Side mounts are also available.
